Well, that was...fun. Made a bad choice and walked over in my runners, accidentally broke something while I was there and on my way back, I ended up with both feet in the ONLY big ass water puddle out there. -__-" Really Life?

Oh, to answer Claudio's question: Joachim succumbed to The Darkening because of the guilt he felt at bringing the others to the evil school, the anger he harbors for his parents because of their fighting and the effect it has on his sister, and the sadness he buries when they threaten to leave eachother and fight over who gets to keep him.
